Sarotherodon linnellii ( Syn .: Tilapia linnellii ) is a species of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae) thatoccurs endemically in the Cameroonian crater lake Barombi Mbo .

features

Sarotherodon linnellii can reach a length of 18.5 cm, the head, which is especially large in adult specimens, takes 37 to 45% of the standard length . The eyes are relatively large. Young fish are egg-shaped and somewhat high-backed, adults are slender. The fish are gray or greenish in color, the back is brownish and the lower part of the head and the sides have a shimmering silver or metallic green. Brood-tending males are green, most brood-tending females are silvery gray. The pelvic fins can be yellow. The fry are colored silvery. Up to a length of 10 cm they have a tilapia spot on the soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin, which has completely disappeared when the animals are 15 cm long. The jaws are covered with 3 to 6 rows of very small teeth. The teeth of the outer row are two-pointed in juvenile fish and females, and single-pointed in adult males. The lower pharyngealia has single-pointed teeth in front and behind. Your ventral keel is longer than the dentate area. On the lower branch of the first gill arch there are 15 to 20 gill rakes .

Way of life

Sarotherodon linnellii lives in open water in small groups of a maximum of ten animals, but in pairs during the breeding season. Young fish feed primarily on insects, especially mayfly larvae . Adult fish mainly eat phytoplankton . Like all Sarotherodon species is Sarotherodon linnellii a ovophiler mouthbrooders in which the female takes the eggs into his mouth. Spawning takes place near the shore in hollows that the male has created beforehand.
