Sarotherodon (from Gr. Saroth (e) ron "broom", therizo "harvest, mow" and odon "tooth", refers to the bristle-like teeth) is a genus and belongs to the cichlids (Cichlidae).
features
Sarotherodon species have more gill fangs (10 to 28) on the lower part of the first gill arch than tilapia (7-16). The mean length of the lower pharynx in older animals is 27.5 to 43.5% of the length of the skull. The mesethmoid, a skull bone, and the ploughshare (vomer) do not touch. Until recently, the Sarotherodon species belonged to the genus Tilapia . In contrast to those, they are mouthbrooders ; in these, both the females and the males take the eggs into their mouths for brood care, while this is only done by the females in the recently delimited genus Oreochromis .
Occurrence
Originally living in lakes and rivers in Africa and the Middle East, they can now be found in aquaculture facilities around the world and abandoned or escape in warm subtropical lakes and rivers, where they partially displace the native fish.
species
There are 13 types:
- Sarotherodon caroli (Holly, 1930) ( Barombi Mbo )
- Sarotherodon caudomarginatus (Boulenger, 1916)
- Sarotherodon galilaeus (Linnaeus, 1758)
- Sarotherodon knauerae Neumann, Staissny & Schliewen, 2011 ( Ejagham Lake )
- Sarotherodon lamprechti Neumann, Staissny & Schliewen, 2011 (Ejagham Lake)
- Sarotherodon linnellii (Lönnberg, 1903) (Barombi Mbo)
- Sarotherodon lohbergeri (Holly, 1930) (Barombi Mbo)
- Sarotherodon melanotheron Rüppell, 1852 , type species
- Sarotherodon mvogoi (Thys van den Audenaerde, 1965)
- Sarotherodon nigripinnis (Guichenot, 1861)
- Sarotherodon occidentalis (Daget, 1962)
- Sarotherodon steinbachi (Trewavas, 1962) (Barombi Mbo)
- Sarotherodon tournieri (Daget, 1965)
Systematics
The four cichlid genera Myaka , Konia , Pungu and Stomatepia endemic to the Cameroonian crater lake Barombi Mbo are phylogenetically within the genus Sarotherodon .
