The Sarphatipark is a park in the Amsterdam-Zuid district and has an area of 4.5 hectares . The park was named after the Jewish doctor Samuel Sarphati (1813–1866).

history

After 1850 the municipality of Amsterdam decided to create a large residential area called De Pijp between the Amstel river and the Boerenwetering canal . The urban architect van Niftrik received the first order to design a plan for this. Van Niftrik had planned a central station where today's park is. The definitive design was drawn up by the architect J. Kalff, who planned a park in the middle of the quarter. In 1877 the community approved Kalff's plan and the construction of the residential area with a park could be realized. Van Niftrik's original idea of building the park in the English landscape style was accepted.

In 1888 the park got its official name: Sarphatipark. Samuel Sarphati, who was the first to think about creating a park in what would later become a residential area, was given a statue in the middle of the park . At the time of Sarphati the area was an extensive pastureland . Only in the later Albert Cuypstraat were a wood sawmill , some country houses and a hostel.

From 1887 luxurious houses and apartments with high rents were built around the park. In order to be able to pay for this, the residents rented premises to prostitutes. De Pijp was known for prostitution at the time . In 1902 brothels were banned and in 1911 new moral laws were passed, reducing prostitution in the area.
