Sascha Groschang

Sascha Groschang is an American cellist and music teacher.

Life

Groschang comes from a family of musicians and began playing the piano at the age of three before switching to the cello at the age of nine. She then studied cello at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the Mannes College of Music , chamber music at the Juilliard School, and participated in Folk Alliance International workshops . She was a cello teacher at the Missouri Western State University Music School , of which she was a member of the piano trio, and has taught at the University of Ottawa and the Metropolitan Community Colleges in Kansas City.

She performed as a member of the Malaysian International Festival Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur, toured China twice with the Mantovani Pops Orchestra and was Artist in Residence at the Thailand International Composition Festival in Chaing Mai in 2011. As a member of the newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble , she plays works by contemporary composers and is principal cellist of the Saint Joseph Symphony . In the field of chamber music, she has worked with musicians and ensembles such as the Orion String Quartet , the Mendelssohn String Quartet , the Mannes Trio , the Philadelphia Quartet , Margo Garrett , Jacob Latin , Donald McGinnis , Leon Fleisher , Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman .

In addition to classical music, Groschang also plays folk music, jazz and improvisation music, rock and alternative music. She has appeared with Peter Gabriel , Josh Groban , Sarah McGlaughlin , the Trans-Siberian Orchestra , Michael Bublé , Idina Menzel , Amy Grant , Michael W. Smith , recording sessions with Ashanti and Joanna Newsom, and appeared on the off-Broadway show Matthew Passion . As a member of the duo the Wires (with violinist Laurel Morgan Parks ) she experimented with unconventional compositions and playing techniques.
