Satara ( Marathi : सातारा Sātārā ) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra . Satara is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

From 1699 to 1700 it was the scene of the battle for Satara .

In the 2011 census, the population was 120,000. Satara was the capital of the Marathas Empire in the 17th century .
