Satimshan Sanbaev

Satimschan Sanbajew ( Kazakh and Russian Сатимжан Санбаев ; born September 16, 1939 in Makat , Guryev region ; † June 29, 2013 ) was a Kazakh writer and actor.

Life

Sanbayev was born in 1939 in the Soviet Union as the son of the Kazakh intellectual Khamsa Sanbayev . From 1956 he graduated from the Orenburg University of Agriculture and became an agricultural engineer. The topic of his diploma thesis was the complex mechanization of animal breeding farms. He then worked as chief engineer in the Engels sovkhos in Guryev Oblast . In 1962 he turned down an offer for cosmonaut training .

In terms of sport, Sanbayev was active as a wrestler in the classic style and had achieved the title of master of sports . He was aiming for the Union Championship. On the way to the union elimination he had an accident in a car accident. He managed to reach a rest stop on foot at minus 40 degrees, carrying the child of a fatally injured person, where he lost consciousness.

Long stays in hospitals and sanatoriums followed. A return to the old job was not possible for health reasons. He first had to learn to walk again. At this stage he turned to writing. He initially wrote his own works as a sideline. Professionally, he became a lecturer and then got a position as senior lecturer for translation literature at the Shasuschy publishing house in Alma-Ata . He also translated Kazakh literature into Russian himself .

He also continued his writing work when he was discovered as a film actor. He wrote his novella The White Aruana while filming the revolutionary film A Way of a Thousand Werst , in which he played the leading role. With the success of the "white Aruana" published in 1968, he made writing his main occupation. Sanbayev described himself as "a student of Aitmatov ".
