Benito Sanz y Fores (born March 21, 1828 in Gandia , † November 1, 1895 in Madrid ) was a Spanish cardinal and bishop .

Life

Benito Sanz y Fores was born in Gandia on March 21, 1828. He studied philosophy and law at the University of Valencia , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in law in 1848 . He continued his studies at the seminary in Valencia, where he received his doctorate in canon law in 1853 and in theology in 1857 .

He was ordained a priest on March 27, 1852 in Valencia . From 1851 to 1857 he taught canon law in his seminar as a professor . He was also Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Valencia . He worked as Abbreviator in the Nunciature in Spain and as examiner of Saint Rota in Madrid and preached in 1864 at the Spanish royal court.

He was appointed Bishop of Oviedo on June 22, 1868 . The nuncio in Spain Alessandro Franchi consecrated him on November 8th of the same year as bishop; Co- consecrators were Tomás Iglesias Bárcones , Bishop of Mondoñedo , and Francisco de Sales Crespo y Bautista , Auxiliary Bishop in Toledo . He took part in the First Vatican Council . On November 18, 1881, Leo XIII called. him Archbishop of Valladolid and on December 30, 1889 to Archbishop of Seville .

Pope Leo XIII. accepted him in the consistory of January 16, 1893 as cardinal priest of Sant'Eusebio in the college of cardinals . He died in Madrid on November 1, 1895 at the age of 67 and is buried in the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Seville, Santa María de la Sede .
