The type Saturn is a series of four container motor ships from the Warnow shipyard , which was put into operation between 1987 and 1989.

Special

The four ships commissioned by Deutsche Seereederei have parking spaces for 1,164 TEU. They are 174.20 meters long and 25.4 meters wide. A MAN two-stroke diesel engine of type K 8 SZ 70/125 B with an output of 12,166 kW serves as the drive .

After the Mercur and Mercur II types, the Saturn ship was the third further developed series of full container ships from a GDR shipyard and is the result of the Perspective Ship 2000 research project . The following eight partners have been working on a modern cargo ship since 1979: Kombinat Schiffbau, Kombinat Maritime Transport and Port Management, Fischkombinat Rostock, Wilhelm Pieck University Rostock , Engineering College for Maritime Studies Warnemünde / Wustrow, Engineering College Wismar , DSRK , Maritime Office of the GDR. This type of ship corresponded in the objective of the German ship of the future (SdZ). It is a single screw motor ship in double hull construction with a main deck and underlying side deck strips, a long forecastle with a wide transom as well as a bow and stern bulge. The ships were designed for worldwide travel. With a draft of 9.60 meters, they run 17.5 knots. The crew consists of an average of 25 people. There is also cabin space for up to eleven interns on board.

The ships

Four ships were built for the Deutsche Seereederei , with the Walter Ulbricht being the last new build to be delivered to the still state-owned DSR.
