Sauria Buttress is an approximately 1300 m high rock pillar in the East Antarctic Coatsland . In the Shackleton Range , it looms between the Lundström Knoll and the Pioneers Escarpment .
Aerial photos of this rock pillar were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy . The British Antarctic Survey carried out surveys between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1972 after the French inventor Charles Sauria (1812–1895), who developed the first working friction match in 1831 .
