history

On September 20, 1809, the Bury and Norwich Post mentioned 75-year-old T. Ling, a seller of saloop (a hot drink made from the bark of Sassafras albidum), buns , and sausage rolls. The Times first mentioned this takeout in 1864 when William Johnstone, " Wholesaler , Pork Pie Maker, and Sausage Roll Producer", was fined £ 15 for causing public nuisance for storing a large amount of meat on his property that was unhealthy and good for them Food production was unsuitable. In 1894, a case of theft provided an insight into the manufacture of sausage rolls in the Victorian era: the accused trainee was taught to soak wholemeal bread in ocher , salt and pepper in order to make a substitute for the beef sausage used in the filling of sausage rolls .
