List of grape varieties

The white grape variety Sauvignac is an interspecific new breed between Sauvignon × Riesling and an unknown resistance partner. Genes of the Amur vine ( Vitis amurensis ) and Vitis vinifera have been detected. It belongs to the newer, so-called "CAL" series from the Swiss vine grower Valentin Blattner , bred in Soyhières in the Swiss canton of Jura, and is known under the breeding number VB CAL 604.

Sauvignac produces white wines with aromas of apricots, apples, limes and black currants. The variety is still grown in very small quantities in Germany, including on the Werderaner Wachtelberg .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The grapes of the new grape variety are loose berries. The berries are round, slightly pink and hard-skinned when fully ripe. The foliage is similar to that of Riesling.

The grape variety is characterized by very good resistance to downy mildew ( downy mildew ) and botrytis ( gray mold rot ). Since budding is relatively late, there is little danger of late frosts. The maturity of Cal 6-04 is about a week before the Riesling. The growth is similar to the Riesling and is medium strong. The wood ripeness is very good. The yield is similar to that of Riesling. The vine is not very sensitive to winter frosts. The Sauvinac grape variety belongs to the new generation of Piwis. Piwis are fungus-resistant grape varieties which, through cross-breeding, show resistance to the worst pathogens in viticulture and make it possible to significantly limit the use of pesticides or to dispense with their use entirely.
