Scaphisoma subalpinum , formerly Scaphosoma s. , is a beetle from the subfamily of the boat beetle (Scaphidiinae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 2.5 to 2.8 millimeters. The suture strip of the wing cover runs differently than that of the mushroom barge beetle ( Scaphisoma agaricinum ) up to the pronotum , bends outwards in front of the base and stops about halfway through the base. The fourth link of the antennae is only half as long as the fifth. The species is very similar to the mushroom barge beetle, but is almost twice as large.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in northern and central Europe, in places also in southern Europe and the Caucasus . In Scandinavia the distribution reaches the extreme north in some places, in Finland the distribution extends to Lapland . The species is absent in England and Denmark. From southern Europe, the species is known from central and southern Italy, France and Croatia. The species is widespread in Germany, but more widespread in the north than in the center and south. There the species occurs mainly in the mountains. In Austria it is common everywhere down to subalpine locations. The animals colonize fungal dead wood and mushrooms.
