A shepherd's wagon church

Schäferwagenkirchen are mobile churches of the Protestant deanery Gunzenhausen in the Franconian Lake District . There is also a shepherd's wagon church in Eckernförde (Schleswig-Holstein).

history

The idea of the Schäferwagenkirchen was developed in 2007; the inauguration of the first of the three shepherd car churches so far took place on May 1, 2008. The songwriter Johannes Matthias Roth had composed the song “A Church on Wheels” for this. In a press report, the inauguration of the Schäferwagenkirchen was described as a "world premiere".

The churches have the shape of a shepherd's wagon with a small roof turret for a converted ship's bell and can be transported as a car trailer. Inside there is a cross and altar as well as seating for around 80 people on 20 benches, which, however, have to be set up outdoors for church services. The mobile churches are also equipped with loudspeaker systems. They are used, among other things, for sea services at Altmühlsee and Brombachsee , but also on campsites. The Schäferwagenkirchen, which cost around 13,000 euros each to build, are also rented to other parishes.

In winter, the shepherd's wagon churches are stored in a farmer's machine hall, but one example remains on the church square in Gunzenhausen and complements the Christmas market there.

In September 2009 the Schäferwagenkirchen was the project of the month for Church on the move .

Two shepherd car churches were in use at the Ecumenical Church Congress in Munich in 2010 .

A specially built shepherd's wagon church has been on the beach in Eckernförde since June 2019. The church on the beach belongs to the parish of Rendsburg-Eckernförde and is intended for baptisms and weddings, but also for events on the beach.
