Schøyen Collection
The Schøyen Collection (Norwegian Schøyen-samlingen ) is the largest private manuscript collection of the 20th century. It is located in Oslo and London . The collection was founded by Martin Olsen Schøyen and is continued by his son Martin Schøyen .
Her inventory items cover a period of over 5,000 years, the collection includes 13,700 manuscripts and objects from different times, regions and languages and on different descriptive materials. 740 of these are available online. The collection also includes almost 1,100 papyri .
The collection is structured systematically, catchwords are the Bible , history , palaeography and literature , in addition it also presents manuscripts and interesting facts about the natural sciences , mathematics , music and other things . Part of the collection is made available on their website. In 2012, 90% had not yet been published.
The origin of many pieces in the collection is doubtful. They are believed to have come from robbery excavations in Iraq , Afghanistan and other countries. From time to time Martin Schøyen has resold individual pieces or entire parts of the collection, for example in 2012 his paleographic fragments, some of which came from the collection of the paleographer Bernhard Bischoff .
