Shell stone on Bennerberg

The Schalenstein in the state forest Schieder is located on the southwestern slope of Benner mountain , above the Niesetales in the East Westphalian municipality of Schieder-Schwalenberg in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

This bowl stone , which is about 3.5 m long and 0.8 m high in the middle, has about 70 bowl-shaped depressions the size of an apple on its shield-shaped back, some of which reveal a series or grouping. In the neighboring districts of Brakelsiek and Lothe , the stone is also called Richter or Richtstein. In the vicinity there are mostly other boulders in a row, each carrying individual or numerous bowls. During an archaeological test excavation by Leo Nebelsiek , four prehistoric pottery shards were found on the west side of the bowl stone at a depth of 25 to 30 cm, which can be dated to the Neolithic or the Bronze Age . On both sides of the rows of bowl stones, low terraces were observed on the mountainside, which were certainly created by human hands.

About 50 m south of the shell stone, there is another strikingly shaped stone block on a forest path with three foot to head-sized depressions, which were probably created naturally. This stone, to which a legend is linked, is also known as the devil's or witch's stone in the neighboring villages.

The quartzite stone blocks lying on the slope of the Bennerberg are boulders from the geological stage of the Rhaetium , which were transported there during one of the ice ages .
