Schattenweber is a fantasy and medieval-inspired folk group from the Hamburg area.

They refer to their music as "fairytale folk" or "medieval-inspired fantasy folk". Their music consists largely of their own compositions, mixed with historically transmitted pieces from the Middle Ages , Renaissance and Baroque periods and Irish Folk , Klezmer and Eastern European music. The group appears at markets of the Middle Ages , castle festivals, tavern evenings, festivals as well as live role plays .

history

Silva had already made music with Kjenjo as the duo "Loewenthal" for a number of years, Skadia with Wilaf in the band "Oenothera". A chance encounter between Skadia and Silva resulted in a meeting of all four who together founded the group "Schattenweber". After first appearances at live role plays, tavern evenings and festivals, Skadia had to leave the group at the end of 2009 due to lack of time. For this, Chiara Riekhoff came as a guest musician on the Celtic harp and accompanied the group especially during performances in the winter season.

In 2010, the shadow weavers increasingly made a name for themselves in the North German Middle Ages scene with numerous market appearances. They were often accompanied by Klaus Kassebeer as a guest player on hurdy-gurdy and French bagpipes. At the same time, the group was working on their first studio album "Jahresbild", which was finally released in February 2011. At the end of the year Dagmar joined the group as a guest musician with oboe, flutes and the Celtic harp.

In 2012, the band experimented with unusual instrumentation and different concepts, including Meik Nickel on didgeridoo and clarinet. In the summer of that year Imke Janßen ("Isol") joined them with harp, vocals and recorders, initially only for a few appearances. A short time later, founding member Wilaf decided to leave the group at the end of the season. The band members gave various musical goals as the reason.

In the years 2013–2015, the group was open to the public. The remaining founding members appeared as a duo or in a changing line-up with various instrumentalists and singers. A main cast is emerging again. In addition to Isol, who joined the group more firmly, Matthias Willkens ("Meister Bezius") joined in on drums and percussion. Since 2014 Maik Hoppe on the Irish harp and Roswitha Conrad ("Sita") on viol and flute have also been there.

At the beginning of 2015 the second album "Bilderspiel" was released, which was largely financed through crowdfunding . In the course of the crowdfunding campaign, the first making-off videos for the new album were also released.

Since 2016, the number of permanent band members has increased to six thanks to Sophie Sommerfeld ("Riona") on violin, bouzouki and much more.
