The Schellenbeck is a 2.107 kilometer long stream in the Oberbarmen district of Wuppertal . It is a right tributary of the Schwarzbach , which in turn is a right tributary of the Wupper .

The Schellenbecker Bach tautology is also often used for the name of the flowing water . ( Beck is the Low German word for Bach.)

The brook gives its name to Schellenbecker Straße , the district on this street is also called " Schellenbeck ".

etymology

The etymological origin is not entirely clear. According to one interpretation, the part of the name “schell” comes from “scheel” (crooked), which refers to a topographical location. According to another interpretation, “ringing” comes from sounding bright (sound of the flowing stream water). According to another interpretation, “schell” comes from “to bind”, which means the pronouncement of judgments by the “Schill” (chief judge). The name could thus be traced back to an old court.

topography

The brook rises at around 258 meters above  sea level in a small grove in Next Breck- West. Immediately behind the source, it is fed from a 260 meter long unnamed stream from the left from the direction of the beekeeping path. The Schellenbeck flows in a south-easterly direction and after around 150 meters passes under the federal motorway 46 . Here it flows in a near-natural area, which consists of fields and meadows on the western side and borders on single-family houses on the eastern side.

After around 1000 meters there is an allotment garden on the eastern side , then the Schellenbeck is fed from the right by the 937 meter long Beck in Allenkotten . The brook now flows further in an easterly direction, after another 200 meters the 822 meter long Haarhauser Bach flows into it from the left .

About 1,850 meters from the source, the Schellenbeck has reached the former railway line of the Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen-Hattingen railway line and piped under the site for a distance of around 80 meters. After a further 80 meters, the stream flows into the Schwarzbach at 190 meters above sea level , which later flows into the Wupper.

history

From the Middle Ages until 1922, the brook was border waters. Among other things, it separated the Beyenburg office of the Duchy of Berg from the Wetter office of the Grafschaft Mark and was also the border between the Rhineland and Westphalia until the incorporation of Nahe Brecks in Barmen .

The Schellenbeck farm (also Schellenbeke) was an estate that belonged to the Oberhof Einern . It was first mentioned in 1410.

There was also a Kotten in the upper Schellenbeck, which was run by the Schellenbeck family. Members of the family were also mentioned as bleachers and yarn dealers in documents from the 17th and 18th centuries.
