VGH Insurance at Schiffgraben 4

Schiffgraben 4 in Hanover is the address of one of the main administrative buildings of VGH Insurance . In and around today's administration building on Schiffgraben there are numerous exhibits of the visual arts by various artists.

History and description

The previous buildings from 1888

In the place of today's administration building there was a building in the neo-Gothic style since the end of the 19th century , which was built between 1888 and 1890 according to plans by the architect Theodor Unger . Emil Lorenz expanded this previous building from 1910 to 1913. This building was demolished in 1969.

The new buildings from 1970

New buildings on Warmbüchenkamp

Based on designs by the architect Walter Henn , a new building with numerous open- plan offices on the upper floors was built on an approximately triangular base between 1970 and 1973 . Almost two decades later, the Leonhardt - Schirmer - Meyer architects' association initially planned extensions from 1991 to 1994, then again from 1995 to 1998, during which the main entrance of the VGH was relocated to Warmbüchenkamp street.

For the completion of the first new building in 1973, the bronze sculpture “Large Call Sign” by Fritz Koenig was erected as art in public space in front of the former main entrance on the Schiffgraben.

Also in 1973, the sculpture “Dancing Couple” created by Helge Michael Breig was installed in the entrance hall of the time .

In the courtyard of the building on the Schiffgraben, the VGH had the sculptor Karl Gundelach devised and carved out of stone sculptures of the farmer, the clergyman, the knight and the merchant set up. The bronze figure “Seated” by Herbert Volwahsen installed there is more recent .

According to a concept from 1994, the interior of the administrative complex was equipped with works by artists from Lower Saxony in the course of the structural extensions , in one main area with paintings by painters from the 1920s .

Individual areas of the building are determined by contemporary art from various artists.
