The M-65 or M-1965 is a waist-length field jacket used by the US armed forces . It was introduced in 1966 and replaced the M-51 field jacket. The manufacturer was Alpha Industries . Initially used by the US Army in the Vietnam War , it later became a popular jacket in the civilian sector because of its robustness and comfortable cut. In clothing fashion ( military look ) and outdoors , it has been valued as a leisure jacket since the 1970s. It had a style-forming effect on fashion for decades and has become a kind of personal trademark with recognition value . Robert De Niro wore an M-65 as Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver . In West Germany gave her idol George with his role as a crime scene commissioner Horst Schimanski , in which he usually an M-65 was without epaulets even nicknamed "Schimanski Jacket". Osama bin Laden was also often seen in photographs with an M-65.

The M-65 field jacket is often confused with the M-65 parka .

Others

Götz George wore the jacket as " Horst Schimanski ", commissioner in the ARD series " Tatort " and "Schimanski", which became a cult object as a distinguishing mark, in the crime scene films in a washed-out beige-colored or gray version, where the epaulets were removed. Götz George himself had the idea for this “uniform”. The film jacket is said to have originally been green and bleached by the costume designer. One original jacket is exhibited in the Berlin Film Museum (from “ Zabou ”) and one in the Duisburg Museum of Culture and City History , and another is in the Ruhr Museum in Essen .
