The shimmering pondweed is an herbaceous plant . The underwater leaves are up to 13 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate, with a rounded, not narrowed, half-stem-encompassing base, in front they are often sharply pointed, and they have small, very early falling teeth; they have a strong shine when dried. The partial fruits are sharply keeled on the outside; but they are seldom developed.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 52.

Occurrence

The shimmering pondweed occurs from the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere to the Philippines.

ecology

The shimmering pondweed is a water plant . It grows in standing or flowing, base-rich, oligo- to mesotrophic waters. In the shallow water area of lakes , ponds , backwaters and in river bays, it is mainly rooted on sandy ground at a water depth of 0.3 to 1.5, rarely up to 2.1 meters. It is the character species of the Potamogetonetum nitentis, but also occurs in the society of the Potamogetonetum panormitano-graminei.
