Ham sandwich

The ham sandwich is one of the sandwiches and refers to a bread with a coating of butter and ham . It is not to be confused with the generic term for hearty and aromatic rye bread coals from rye wholemeal flour or rye meal , which usually does not contain ham shares.

The ham sandwich can have different shapes. A distinction can be made both in the choice of bread and in the choice of ham. Mostly air-dried or smoked raw ham is used. Occasional additions are cucumber , pickled cucumber or tomato slices or cheese . When a fried ice cream is added, it is known as Strammer Max . Instead of raw ham, cooked ham can also be used.

It is - often still today - part of the menu in restaurants and bars with “ German cuisine ” or home-style cooking .

reception

In literary works , the ham bread is occasionally used in connection with an unusual, hearty home cooking; In his Tchaikovsky novel Symphonie Pathétique , the writer Klaus Mann has Baron Buxhövden prepare a ham sandwich for Tchaikovsky's nephew Vladimir: “You must think about your health, Wladi! Eat at least half of this bread [...]. "

The ham bread has also found its way into the world of comedy. The German humorist Loriot has dedicated himself to the subject twice, namely in the sketch worker interview (from: Loriot's clean screen , 1976) and on the occasion of the broadcast on his 80th birthday ( talk show with ham bread ).

In the song Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder , the band Die Toten Hosen created a musical memorial for the ham sandwich.
