The Battle of the Blue Water ( Belarusian Бітва на Сініх Водах ; Lithuanian Mūšis prie Mėlynųjų Vandenų ; Ukrainian Битва на Синіх Водах ) was a dispute between three Lithuanians of the Golden Horde and the Grand Duchy .
As a result of the Battle of the Irpen in 1321, the principality of Kiev was a vassal state of Lithuania. Even so, it continued to pay tribute to the Golden Horde . This only changed with the Battle of the Blue Water, which took place in 1362 on the Synjucha River near Torhowyzja .
The Golden Horde had been in a domestic political crisis since 1357. The Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas , who shared his empire with his brother Kęstutis , took advantage of this situation . During their tenure, the two princes pursued the goal of their father to unite all the countries of the former Kievan Rus . Algirdas declared that all of Russia should simply belong to the Lithuanians.
As a result of the battle, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania succeeded in taking Kiev and Podolia . The cultural decline of Kiev under the Golden Horde could be ended and the city became a prince seat of the son of Algirdas. The Lithuanians restored the old order of the Kievan Rus, which is why they were seen as a welcome change from the Mongols.
