Azulai is a police officer who is on patrol in Jaffa. Although he has been with the police for 20 years, he was only promoted on the basis of his service time, because he is too simple-minded to even notice obvious crimes or to recognize them as such. Nevertheless, he is by no means stupid: he has a knowledge of the Bible that impresses even the most orthodox Jews, he speaks almost his native French and the poetic Arabic. Furthermore, he is very conscientious and kind-hearted and a devout Jew. These qualities are not enough for his superiors and so they want to fire him or not extend his contract (despite the great lack of staff). To prevent this, Azulai wants to do his work particularly successfully in his last time. But he doesn't make it. The gang of thugs around Amar, however, prefer him as an attentive police officer in their area and so they involve him in a diplomatically important but judicially unimportant case, which Azulai also closes with the arrest of the perpetrator. In return, he was promoted two ranks straight away, but immediately retired.
