International hit festival of the Baltic countries

The International Schlagerfestival der Ostseeländer , later Schlagerfestival der Ostseestival , was a music competition that took place every summer in Rostock from 1962 to 1976 .

The international Schlagerfestival der Ostseeländer was part of the program of the Ostseewoche , which was held in Rostock from 1958. On July 13, 1962, two artists each from the GDR , Poland , Finland , Norway , Sweden and Denmark competed for the first time. At the premiere, the winners were determined by a public vote. From 1963, a jury made up of all representatives of the participating Baltic Sea states decided on the winners, who received cash prizes. There was also an audience award, which consisted of an amber plate, as well as numerous special prizes. Until 1964, the selection was marked by hits that were not written specifically for the festival. Later only songs composed for the festival were allowed to be presented. Also until 1964 there was one male and one female winner, after that there was only one winner.

The first winners were Bärbel Wachholz with I can never forget that and Fred Frohberg with Am Kai you are waiting .

In 1967 the GDR record label Amiga released the album 5 Jahre Internationales Schlagerfestival der Ostseeländer , on which the winning titles of the Nordic countries are only included in one instrumental version. In 1972 the Amiga album Schlagerfestival der Ostseestaaten was released .

From 1977 the Schlagerfestival was called Menschen und Meer and was organized by the Rostock concert and guest performance directorate, the Ostseestudio of GDR television and by the radio GDR holiday wave. 18 to 22 countries each sent soloists and groups, including the Federal Republic of Germany , Cuba and Ireland . With the fall of 1989, Menschen und Meer was held for the last time in the summer.
