The Schwedt lock is a lock in the Schwedter Querfahrt (SQF) and is located in the urban area of Schwedt / Oder .
history
The Schwedt lock was built in 1923/24 and was originally designed for self-service. The two miter gates and folding gates had to be operated by hand.
In 1968 the hand cranks were replaced by electric drives. Due to wear and tear and limited functionality, they were replaced by a prototype in 1994, which, however, did not prove itself in ongoing operation. Due to numerous disruptions, the lock had to be closed several times.
As the entrance lock to the Oder , the Schwedt lock is of particular importance for the icebreaker concept of the Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office . It must also be operational in the winter months, especially when the thaw sets in, for the icebreakers to pass through . In order for the water to flow away on the Oder, the ice has to be broken upstream. If the icebreakers cannot pass the lock, ice barriers and flooding can occur. For this reason, a comprehensive renovation of the facility took place in autumn 2001. The failure-prone drives were replaced by electric lifting cylinders and air bubble systems were built into the upper and lower head . They prevent the mortise gates and gates from icing up and reduce wear.
Lock data
The Schwedt lock compensates for the water level between the Oder and the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthal waterway with an average drop of 0.25 m. It is operated by the Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office and served daily at fixed times on site. The lock chamber can be used over a length of 61.5 m and a width of 10.0 m. To the north-east of the lock, a footbridge crosses the Schwedter Querfahrt.
