The Schleusenpark is a green area in the Wik district of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital, Kiel . It is located south of the Holtenauer lock between Uferstraße and Herthastraße. The 1.5 hectare park area is approx. 160 meters long and 75 meters wide.
history
The plans for the park, which was completed in 2012, had their origins in an urban planning ideas competition from 1999. On this basis, the Kiel council meeting in 2001 decided on the urban development framework plan Marinequartier Kiel-Wik . The planning for the park was carried out by the Kiel engineering association Possel und Partner (IPP). Before the construction, the 3 hectare site of the former gas power station of the Stadtwerke Kiel had been freed of disused buildings, foundations, lines, technical systems and contaminated sites for 1.5 million euros. The planning and construction costs for the lock park amounted to around 900,000 euros. A newly laid path to the street Am Kiel Canal connects the lock park with the machine museum Kiel-Wik .
Wiker balcony
In the northern part of the park is the Wiker balcony, a 2.30 meter high viewing platform, which should allow a view of the Kiel Canal , the lock system and the Kiel Fjord from a height of + 17.00 m . The trees and houses between the platform and the Kiel Canal, however, hinder the prospects provided by the planning. The NDR satellite broadcast Extra 3 humorously presented the Wiker balcony as an example of structures that do not do justice to their actual purpose.
