The Schloßberg ( 587  m above sea  level ) is located immediately northwest of Neuhaus an der Eger , a district of Hohenberg an der Eger in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains (northeast Bavaria). The mountain is known for its geology, the earlier basalt extraction and a former castle complex .

geology

The Schloßberg is a tertiary igneous rock that belongs to a volcanic zone that extends from the Czech Republic via Karlsbad and Eger to northeast Bavaria. The global unfolding of the Alps triggered tectonic movements and many crevices and crevices collapsed in the rock. From the interior of the earth, molten magma penetrated the fracture points (basalt volcanism). On the way up, the melt flow solidified into basaltic passages, which often resulted in magnificent column formations. In the following millions of years, the top layers were removed by erosion, exposing the harder basalt formations, which now appear in the landscape as lava ceilings or cone mountains (volcanic chimneys) like in the Schloßberg . The basalt deposits were used to extract high-quality gravel and grit. The quarry is a protected natural monument and is completely overgrown.
