Arcelot Castle

The Arcelot Castle ( French Château d'Arcelot ) is located in the French commune of Arceau in the canton of Mirebeau sur Bèze of the Côte-d'Or department , which belongs to the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .

The castle was classified as a Monument historique on September 22, 1948 and thus placed under monument protection. On April 30, 1999, the classification was extended to the castle park . A special feature of the castle is the large salon , which is completely furnished with marble and colored stucco , a rarity in Burgundy. The property is privately owned.

history

The beginnings of the castle go back to 1217. The chapel that belongs to the castle dates from this time . The first work on the castle in its current form was carried out under Philibert I von Verchère, between 1711 and 1720. It was a building with two pavilions . His grandson Philibert II, Marquis of Arcelot, at that time Councilor of the Parlements of Burgundy, had the current castle built by the architect Thomas Dumorey between 1761 and 1764. It was the first neoclassical style castle in Burgundy. The castle was inherited in direct line until 1870. That year Guillaume Verchère died without any descendants. Therefore, the inheritance went to his sister's son, who married Antoine-Bernard Carrelet de Loisy in 1801. The castle has been owned by this family since Ernest Carrelet de Loisy.

Park and garden

Behind the castle is one of the largest parks in Burgundy. The 45 hectare park, partly laid out in the style of an English garden , was created by the landscape architect Jean-Marie Morel and is one of the few that survived the designer. Another special feature is the seven-hectare pond area.
