The Argy Castle ( French Château d'Argy ) is part of the French community Argy in the department of Indre in the Region Center-Val de Loire .

history

A lord of Argy is first mentioned in 1115 on the occasion of the foundation of the Notre-Dame du Landais Abbey. His descendants in the male line owned the place until the end of the 13th century. By marriage, Argy then went to the Lord of Prungé, whose daughter bequeathed the place to the Brillac family , who died out in 1585. Their heirs from the Crevant family sold Argy in 1636 to Jean Philippeaux, Lord of Buzançais († 1660). At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle and the domaine passed to the Lamotte family.

architecture

The previous building of Argy Castle was more of a country house than a castle . Today's building consists of three wings, which are grouped around a rectangular courtyard with corner towers. The main part of the complex, two wings with galleries , the donjon and a round tower called Brillac Tower , was built in the 15th century by Charles Brillac, Chamberlain of King Louis XII. , built. He died in Milan in 1509 .

The Donjon, a mighty square tower, is connected to the massive Brillac tower on the other narrow side of the courtyard by a wing with two open galleries one above the other. The adjoining front wing has an open gallery on the ground floor and a large hall on the first floor. Its facade is adorned with a decoration of ermines , lilies and intertwined initials . This ornament is reminiscent of the castle owner who chose the ermine pattern in honor of Queen Anne de Bretagne . The hatchings of this wing date from the 19th century, as well as the adjoining longitudinal wing and its two towers. The wing that originally closed off the courtyard was demolished in the 18th century.

The castle, the farm buildings from the 17th century and the surrounding 40  hectares comprehensive park provide a heritage represents to its cohesion since 1966, the Club du Vieux Manoir endeavors. In addition, the entire building ensemble was expanded to include the pigeon house of the Archives Nationales from 1862 and a regional museum dedicated to life in the Berry province in the 19th century.
