Aschach Castle in Volders

Schloss Aschach is located in the municipality of Volders in the Innsbruck-Land district in Tyrol (Schloss-Aschach-Weg 4).

History of the castle

The original residence is called in 1311 owned by Jakob von Volders ( Jakob der Volrer ). It consisted of a "viereggeten Thurn" and farm buildings. In 1413 during a conflict with Duke Friedrich IV. With the Bavarians over the export of Haller salt and the siege of Friedberg by the Bavarians, the building was destroyed. In 1470 this rule came into the possession of the Füerer family (Furrer). Augustin Fuerer von Aschach was the judge for the knight Florian Waldauf , who had rebuilt Rettenberg Castle in Kolsassberg in 1492 . In 1499, the Aschach residence became a court of law with a prison and a torture chamber.

In 1573 Aschach Castle came to Ernst von Rauchberg. He rebuilt the castle until 1586 in the form it still has today. The house chapel was also built during this time. Ernst von Rauchberg was the chief steward of the Philippine Welser and educator of her two sons from the morganatic marriage with Archduke Ferdinand II. Giovanni Lucchese and his son Alberto Lucchese are believed to be the builders of the Renaissance palace . Archduke Ferdinand II, Philippine Welser and their two sons and Andreas and Karl are said to have stayed here several times in Aschach for various amusements and deer hunts.

The castle was then owned by the von Rauhenberg (1575) and Buchheim (1580) families, the Schenk family and, until 1685, the Rotenbucher family. From 1685 to 1826 the castle was owned by the Remich family, and from 1931 by the von Altenburger family.

Aschach Castle today

The three-story building has a tower and a stair tower. On the ground floor, a stone portal leads to a vaulted entrance hall. A coat of arms stone of the margrave Karl von Burgau is attached above the portal . Low farm buildings enclose a forecourt. The massive, four-storey south tower, which was built directly on the slate of the rock without a cellar, is probably the walls of the original medieval residential tower. The two polygonal corner bay windows are covered with Renaissance hoods. A chapel and a hall on the second floor should be mentioned inside the castle. The house chapel can be recognized by the south-facing bay window with two pointed arched windows; The choir of house chapels was often designed as a bay window, as an ecclesiastical regulation forbade building living spaces above the sanctuary . In the south of the castle there is a small park with lots of trees.

In 2012, the castle was restored by the current owner family, Andreas and Sieglinde Fluckinger, with the support of the Monument Office . The renaissance castle is used privately for residential purposes.
