Yahya Hassan (2015)

Yahya Hassan (born May 19, 1995 in Aarhus ; † April 29, 2020 there ) was a Danish poet of Palestinian descent. His volume of poetry, Yahya Hassan: Digte , published in 2013, is the best-selling volume of poetry by a debutant in the history of Danish literature with more than 120,000 copies.

Life

Hassan grew up as the son of Palestinian refugees in what is described as a “problem area” and a “ghetto” with a high proportion of migrants in Aarhus-West. Hassan describes his parents' house as shattered and he was regularly abused by his father. Hassan slipped into criminality and was placed in special education facilities for juveniles who had committed offenses. At the Solhaven facility in Farsø , educators discovered and promoted his literary talent. In Solhaven there was an affair between the then 16-year-old Hassan and the 38-year-old pedagogue Louise Østergaard, which Hassan addresses in his poem contact persons . In 2014, Østergaard's novel Ord (“Word”) was published, in which the problematic relationship that led to Østergaard's resignation and divorce is processed.

Hassan began to concentrate on writing. He visited u. a. a "rap academy" and creative writing courses at several institutions.

In February 2013 Hassan took part in the Litt Talk literary festival organized by Vallekilde Højskole. His readings were featured on Danish television. In June 2013 Hassan performed his poems in the traditional Aarhus Teater . In September Hassan read from his poems as part of the Århus Festival Week . In a review of the Danish radio, the linguistic virtuosity of his "ghetto poems" was highlighted.

In October 2013, Politiken , one of the leading Danish daily newspapers, published a highly regarded interview with Hassan under the headline “ I'm fucking mad at my parents' generation” . In the article, as elsewhere, Hassan was critical of his background. He attested that his parents' generation clung to the Koran while they defraud the welfare state , beat up their children and prevent them from integrating into society.

For these views Hassan was in turn criticized by Danish Muslims. There were also repeated death threats against Hassan, who was therefore placed under personal protection. In November 2013, Hassan was attacked and injured by an Islamist in Copenhagen .

Yahya Hassan (2013)

In November 2013 Hassan read from his poems in a school in Odense in the presence of a large number of journalists and the Danish Minister for Social Affairs and Integration. The reading was initially supposed to take place in the city library, but it was canceled due to the dangerous situation identified by the police. The library's rejection was criticized and also discussed in the Danish parliament .

In April 2015, Hassan joined the small National Party , for which he ran unsuccessfully in the 2015 Folketing election. In February 2016, Hassan was expelled from the party after being arrested for drug driving.

Hassan was sentenced to one year and nine months' imprisonment and a fine of 40,000 Danish kroner in Aarhus in September 2016 for injuring a seventeen-year-old boy with a pistol.

At the end of April 2020, Hassan was found dead in his apartment; he was 24 years old.

The collection of poems Yahya Hassan: Digte initially appeared in an edition of 800 copies by the traditional Gyldendal publishing house . This first edition sold out very quickly. The publisher then increased the circulation several times. By April 2014, more than 100,000 copies had been sold.

In the poems, Hassan processed his growing up in a shattered environment that is determined by violence, failure and crime. The poems are also indictments against his parents' generation and against Islam.

The poems were well received by Danish literary critics. Were praised u. a. the innovative and powerful language and the socially realistic content. Due to Hassan's migration background and the criticism of certain immigrant milieus expressed in the poems, the debate about Hassan's poems also has political features, although literary criticism recognizes that the book is a literary work. In Politiken , Hassan was referred to as an "immigrant poet". Hassan himself emphasized that he should only express himself as a poet and not be a participant in the political integration debate.

Jörg Lau sees “features of a lyrical educational novel ” in the book . Hassan has been classified as an angry young man, but that leads on the wrong track: “This is actually not about anger, but rather about freedom. And poetic language is the means to win it. "

Besides Denmark, the collection of poems is currently sold in the Netherlands , Italy , Norway , Sweden and Germany . A translation into English was planned.
