Bartensleben Castle
The Bartensleben Castle is a baroque palace in Erxleben (hamlet United Bartensleben ) in the district Borde ( Saxony-Anhalt ). It was built in the middle of the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier moated castle .
history

Originally the von Bartensleben family resided in Bartensleben on the moated castle as the predecessor of the later castle. The family moved in the 13th century to today's Wolfsburg area, where they owned the Wolfsburg moated castle, which they built around 1300 and later expanded into a fortress-like structure, until it died out in 1742.
The von Veltheim noble family, who came from Veltheim (Ohe) in the Wolfenbüttel area, had been sitting on the Bartensleben moated castle since around 1400 . Ludolf I. Veltheim was the archbishop of Magdeburg with the castle site in Bartensleben invested . In 1467 one of his successors, Hilmar I von Veltheim , was enfeoffed with the village of Bartensleben.
The baroque castle was built by the von Veltheim in the middle of the 18th century on the foundation walls of the former moated castle, which once had three outer castles . In 1757 Heinrich Adrian von Veltheim had the palace expanded to include the middle and western wings, with the interior being decorated in the Rococo style .
After the Second World War in 1945, the von Veltheim family fled to the western occupation zone because of the expropriation of the manor due to the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone . The castle was used by the Soviet occupying forces and later by the NVA , in order to then serve as a women's sanatorium " Clara Zetkin " and until 1991 as a retirement home. A significant part of the original substance, such as the staircase with gallery, was removed or destroyed during renovations during GDR times. After the retirement home was closed and the fall of the Wall in 1989, it is now privately owned and not open to the public.
Building
The castle is surrounded by a wide moat on a castle island, to which a bridge leads. It is a sandstone block building with three wings and mansard hipped roofs. In terms of style, it can be classified in the late Baroque period with approaches from the Frederician Classical period . Existing parts of the castle were recycled, as can be seen from the dates 1471, 1567 and 1578 on various parts of the building. The central point of the palace complex was the stairwell with a gallery.
Adjacent to the castle are larger ponds and a former English landscape park , which has been restructured since 2008. It was probably built in the 18th century from an earlier baroque garden .
