The castle of Beaumont-du-Gâtinais , a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the first half of the 17th century, presumably on the site of a previous building from the late 15th century. Century. It was partially demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1984 the remains were added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique . Today the buildings are partly privately owned and partly owned by the municipality.

history

In the 15th century, Jacques Cœur , Chancellor of the Exchequer of King Charles VII of France , was the landlord of Beaumont. In 1493, when his granddaughter married Louis de Harlay, the manor was passed to the de Harlay family. In 1572 it was inherited by Achille de Harlay, first president at the Paris court . In gratitude for his services, the French King Henry IV elevated the Seigneurie Beaumont to a county , which was probably the decisive factor for the construction of the castle. As a result of the French Revolution , the castle was sold in 1798 and partially demolished in 1804.

Round loopholes at the gate

In the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris , a sketch of the castle from 1713 is kept, showing a horseshoe-shaped structure. The name of the architect has not been passed down.

The castle is surrounded by a moat that is fed by the Fusain River and crossed by the four bridges. A bridge leads to the renaissance gate made of boseneck stones , which is flanked by two pavilions and opens onto a forecourt. On both sides of the gate round wall openings can be seen as loopholes for firearms. The south-east, north-east and south-west round towers of the original castle are still preserved.
