The Boucard Castle is located in the town of Le Noyer in the French department of Cher . The building is surrounded by a park and hosts a music festival every year. The property has been listed as a Monument Historique since July 1995 .

Medieval origin

In the 14th century, Gasconier Jean de Boucard moved to the Berry to connect with Agnes Blancafort. One of his descendants, Lancelot der Boucard, built a castle on the grounds of La Motte-du-Plessis in the 15th century . The outer walls, the corner towers and the entrance are still preserved from the original structure. With its moats fed by the Sauldre , the complex has retained its medieval appearance to this day.

Renaissance architecture

In the courtyard of the castle, on the other hand, the visitor finds himself between two facades in the French Renaissance style . Antoine de Boucard, a nobleman at the court of King Francis I , had the left wing built between 1520 and 1530. The right wing with its sculptural decorations is a masterpiece of the classical Renaissance. Outstanding is the tympanum of the entrance, a relief still life depicting weapons, ammunition and many other objects . The year of construction of the wing built for François de Boucard, Antoine's son, is the number 1560 on the lintel of the chimney. After the king's death in 1559, François de Boucard sided with the Reformed and their leader Condé , who also made the Berry strong supported.

Philibert von Montault, who stayed at Boucard Castle from 1671 to 1674, had the rear wing torn off. As with many Loire castles , the closed courtyard was transformed into a U-shaped floor plan that reveals a view of the river.

On the upper floor of the right wing there is a large hall and another large room; both rooms are equipped with huge chimneys.
