history

Up until the 17th century, there were two farms at the site of today's castle, the Dornerhof and the Pluemberghof, which Maria von Wilfersdorf sold to Otto von Radmannsdorf around 1580. He had the farms razed and began building a castle, which, however, due to the high debts of its owner, was pledged as a shell in 1601. Gottfried von Falbenhaupt bought the unfinished building and had it completed by 1624. From Falbenhaupt the castle went to Maria Rosina Freiin von Eibiswald in 1656, who was inherited by her daughter Maria Eusebia Countess Galler. At that time, the estate also included subjects in the Straden parish . In 1720 the castle was inherited by Maria Eleonore Countess Steinpeiß and in 1733 by her son Ferdinand Josef Count Prankh , who sold the property to Archbishop Sigismund von Kollonitz of Vienna in 1746 . The cardinal bequeathed the palace to his adopted nephew Ladislaus Baron Zay von Csömör and the property remained in the possession of the Kollonitz von Kollograd family until 1870 .

After 1870 there were frequent changes of owners. In the period after 1920 the castle was used both as a children's home and as a hostel for guests. After the Second World War , the property stood empty for a long time and was left to decay, as the farmers who owned the castle at that time were more interested in the attached agriculture than in the castle building. Konrad Ceh is documented as the owner for 1955. The Strahl family acquired the property in 1972 and began extensive restoration work. Today the castle houses a restaurant and is used as a space for cultural events, especially in summer.

The current palace building dates from the 17th century and is a two-storey, three-wing Renaissance building with an approximately square inner courtyard and four protruding corner towers. The square corner towers as well as the remains of small bastions in the west of the complex indicate a defensibility, which was no longer given when the castle was built. The former defensive wall is no longer there and can only be seen in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1681. The inner courtyard is surrounded by the castle wings in a horseshoe shape on three sides and is bordered by a wall to the east. The inner courtyard is surrounded by two-storey columned arcades , which are more recent and replace the original wooden galleries . The portal on the western front of the castle shows the year 1624, which indicates the completion of the building. Above this portal there is a small square bell tower with a clock and an onion dome .

The baroque palace chapel is located in the southeast wing of the building. In it you will find an altarpiece from the end of the 17th century, which shows the lamentation of Christ .

A park extends around the castle and two fish ponds have been preserved. The access is through the Meierhof , which is located a little below the actual castle. This Meierhof is reinforced with two square corner towers.
