history

The roots of the castle go back to the year 1007. At the beginning of the 11th century, the first parts of the castle were built under the rule of Alard d'Esnes. The male line of those of Esnes ends in 1105 with Alard II. His daughter marries Eustache de Landas, lord of Eyne in Flanders , son of Amaury VI. and Ermentrude de Béthune . The Esnes family moved to the Landas family, and from then on they were called Landas d'Esnes.

Around 1260 Alix de Beauvoir married the heir Gérard de Landas d'Esnes. Their only daughter broke the castle into the marriage with Alard de Croisille, who carried on the name d'Esnes.

The lords of Esnes were followers of the Count of Hainaut and took part in various disputes with the duchies of Brabant , Limburg and Flanders. However, at the beginning of the Hundred Years War , Jean I of Esnes switched from the side of Hainaut, an ally of the English, to the side of the French king and fell at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.

He was succeeded by the Lords of Esnes, both Vogt of Cambrai and of Amiens. Robert d'Esnes, known as Mansart, was a retainer of the Duke of Orléans . In 1411 he was lord of Esnes, Grécourt, Wavrechin, Vire, Bétancourt and Beauvoir and governor of Coucy Castle , which he held for three months against the siege by Walram III. , the Count of Saint-Pol , defended. Walram fought on the side of the Burgundians for Johann Ohnefurcht , Duke of Burgundy, whose loyal follower he was.

The castle has served as an agricultural property since the French Revolution . During the First World War it served as a German military prison for Russian prisoners of war.
