Jettingen Castle is a mighty three-story four-wing complex with a high hipped roof. It is located in Jettingen in the Günzburg district . The children's and youth writer Isabella Braun was born in the castle on December 12, 1815, and Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was born on November 15, 1907 . The castle is surrounded by an extensive English-style park .

history

The four-storey former moated castle with four massive round corner towers was built by Hans von Stain in 1480 and then rebuilt several times. A small moated castle previously stood in its place.

In 1748 Baron Johann Albrecht Schenk von Stauffenberg (Wülfinger line) acquired the fiefdom, whose son Lothar Philipp Schenk von Stauffenberg made the fief his property by purchasing it. The castle fell into disrepair, so that it resembled a ruin. At that time, as Isabella Braun reported, only one floor was still habitable, the other was in complete disrepair and was used to store old barrels ... The inner courtyard was sunless, damp and cold. The side doors to the offices resembled the entrances to gruesome castle ruins; the stairs to the apartments were no less unfriendly. However, when one had reached the first steppenstaz, the light streamed from two sides into a long, magnificent corridor, from the walls of which the life-size pictures of the Roman emperors stared down. The doors led into a row of stately rooms, all of them interconnected, bordered in east and west by the tower bay window. (quoted in Miehle 1986, p. 20)

In 1833 Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg (Amerdinger line), known as the Lord of Excellence , took over the inheritance. It was he who rebuilt the ruined castle in 1841. In this context, the moat was filled and the fourth floor removed, and various outbuildings were added.

The castle passed into the possession of Hieronymus Graf Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht in 2000 . Between 2000 and 2003, failed previous restorations were refurbished.
