The La Grande Riedera castle

The castle La Grande Riedera (French Château de la Grande Riedera ) is a small country castle in Essert , a village in the Swiss municipality of Le Mouret in the canton of Friborg .

The castle is listed, in the middle protection class (B object).

history

Today's palace complex was created by dividing the so-called Petit-Riedera , which was built for Marti Grottau at the end of the 16th century. Tobie Gottrau from the Pensier branch began building a second mansion called Grand-Riedera at the beginning of the 17th century . With the exception of the horse stables, work on the building ensemble was completed in 1639.

In the years 1890 and 1916 work was carried out on the castle buildings, but this did not change the appearance or the building arrangement. The situation was different with the remodeling begun in 1937 by the then owner Georges Cailler.

In 1962 the property changed into the ownership of Fritz Schürch, the owner of the assembled Tabakfabriken AG in Neuchâtel . From 1983, his descendants used it as a location for exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events. They were followed in 1989 by the Monique Sophie Pobé Stöcklin Foundation , which acquired the property that year and had it completely restored in recent years . The castle now houses a bed and breakfast guesthouse and its premises can be rented for seminars and celebrations.

The art historian Aloys Lauper (see lit. ) describes the castle as follows:

"With its curtain wall , its tower and its division - chapel, house, stable, attic and oven - La Grande Riedera undoubtedly corresponds perfectly to the traditional image of a castle."

The art-historically valuable interior includes elaborately designed ceilings, the decorations in the cabinet on the first floor and the altarpiece in the palace chapel, which is attributed to Jean-François Reyff .
