The castle was later built on the foundation walls of a water castle built in 1445 . In 1499 Dietrich von Hornsberg was the first named owner. In 1698 Hans Gottlieb von Thielau bought the estate from the baron and count von Taube . The old castle complex was demolished and replaced from 1737 to 1740 by a new building of a baroque country castle based on the French model under the Dresden court mason Andreas Adam . The facade design with the sparse, colored pilaster strips corresponds to the late Dresden Baroque style developed by Knöffel , as does the high tower on the roof, which probably had an open bell attachment based on the model of Hubertusburg (such as Elsterwerda Castle or Reinhardtsgrimma Castle ).

In 1889 the family von Pflugk adH Tiefenau received Leuben through marriage . In 1945 the castle owners were expropriated. In the period that followed, the castle was initially used as refugee accommodation and later also as a school. From 1974 the building stood empty and fell into disrepair. In 1990 two "investors" acquired Leuben Castle and cannibalized it, selling doors and chimneys.

In 2004 it was acquired by the newly founded Leubener Schlossverein and began in 2005 with security work, financed with donations and around 200,000 euros in funding for the roof from the Leipzig Regional Council. In 2016, the Leuben Castle Association managed to prevail against opponents from Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt in the game show "Mach dich ran" in the MDR and earned the sum of 200,000 euros for the construction work on the castle.

In September 2017, the Sahrer von Sahr - Schönberg , Marion and Leo von Sahr family, whose ancestors once lived at Dahlen Castle , bought the property and moved in after further renovation measures in Advent 2019.
