Ligist Castle

The division side Castle , also known as Maltese Castle or New Castle known, is located in the market town of Ligist , in voitsberg district in West Styria ( Austria ). The origins of the castle go back to the second half of the 18th century. It has been owned by the Sovereign Order of Malta since 1928 and has housed a local history museum on the ground floor since 1973.

The castle is located a little north of Ligist, at the foot of the castle hill.

The present castle was originally an estate of the Ligist Castle . This manor was expanded and expanded by the Lords of Saurau from 1783, as they refrained from modernizing the castle for financial reasons. The expansion lasted until 1817. In the period between 1880 and 1928 the castle was owned by the Counts of Goëss, who were related to the Saurau . In 1928 the Grand Priory of Bohemia and Austria of the Sovereign Order of Malta acquired the palace and the castle. In 1973 the order provided six rooms on the ground floor for the establishment of a local museum, for which they are still used today. The remaining rooms are used by the order.

The castle is a simple two-storey single-wing building with an elongated, rectangular floor plan. The two floors are separated from each other on the outside by a simple plaster tape and the 18-axis building front facing the street is unadorned. On the courtyard side of the ground floor there are arcades , some of which are provided with the walled-in coat of arms of the Saurau - Teuffenbach family . The access to the local history museum is also located at the arcades. Above this entrance there is an inscription plaque from 1600. A large farm yard is attached to the western part of the castle.

The stone altar, dated 1625, and two statues of Saints Catherine and Karl Borromeo from the castle chapel are now in the Grabenwarth local chapel .
