It was at that time the castle Freudenstein belongs and belonged to the construction of Oberwallsee to its Urbar possession. In 1363 the Premser Mühldorf received it as a fief from the Wallseern . From 1483 after the Wallseer died out, Mühldorf belonged to the Liechtenstein family . In 1491 Virgilius der Premser zu Mühldorf is called. Mühldorf remained in the Premser family until 1560. The last Premser in the male line was Achaz Premser. In 1563 Wilhelm Tupfer von Mitterndorf received the property as a Liechtenstein fief. Hans Georg Siegmar Stangl (1594) followed the swab. After this Mühldorf came to Rosina von Herberstein .

Mühldorf Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674

In 1660 Count Sebastian von Clam acquired the castle, a few years later Matthias von Undorf was its owner. In 1674 Johanna Undorf brought Mühldorf into the marriage with Johann Georg Peisser vonwerteau as a marriage property. In 1747, the Cistercian Wilhering Abbey bought the castle and the land belonging to it from Maria Clara von Hoch. It remained in the ownership of the monastery until 1980, with the complex serving as a meierhof .

In 1942, parts of the folklore collections of the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz were relocated to the palace until the end of the war. The castle then came into private ownership and is now used as a hotel and restaurant. The hotel Mühldorf is housed in the farm buildings, while the former extensive stables are now a veterinary practice.

Mühldorf Castle today

As can be seen in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674, Mühldorf was a heavily fortified moated castle . A wall with two round towers and one square tower protected the complex. The main building was equipped with black watch towers . The castle buildings were dominated by two onion domes. A wooden bridge led to the castle. Opposite the castle were the farm buildings.

The structure of the main building still preserved today only dates back to the 16th century. In addition to the rectangular central building, the Gothic gate tower with the main portal and a small entrance gate has been preserved. The towers are connected to the main building by wings from the second half of the 17th century. In the southwest tower is the castle chapel with an altar from 1660. The moat has been filled and leveled. The grassy ground in front of the castle (the filled in moat) leads over a brick bridge to the gate tower over the corner. The access to the castle is on the courtyard side. The courtyard at the back leads to the former park , which is surrounded by a high wall. The castle building served the owner of the Meierhof as a house floor.

The castle is currently used for private events, celebrations and seminars.
