Merzendorf Castle

Merzendorf Castle , also Mercendarbe mansion , in Latvian Mercendarbes muiža , refers to a castle which is located in the Latvian district of Baldone in the historic Zemgale landscape , near the town of Mercendarbe . The name of the place can be found in historical sources since 1254 and probably goes back to its first inhabitants, a Merzen family.

Architecture and design

Merzendorf Castle has had many owners over the years and has often been renovated or restored , which is why different eras , for example the Rococo , are reflected in the design of the cultural monument . In 1914, other sources claim that in 1916 the manor was added a second floor . One of the outer door leaves , oak in the Rococo style, which dates from the 18th century and was last restored in 2001, is particularly valuable . The ornamental painting in the entrance hall and other rooms as well as the oak staircase with the banisters decorated with ornaments have also been restored and have been preserved. The floor tiles are almost 100 years old.

The property is surrounded by a well-kept park with a lake. An approximately one kilometer long, hundred-year-old linden avenue leads to the castle. The 132 linden trees - 66 on each side - were planted in 1894.

history

Originally owned by Peter von Biron (1724–1800), the last Duke of Courland , it was sold to Baron Friedrich Georg von Lieven (1748–1800) on August 11, 1786 along with the associated land and lakes for 31,000 thalers . Baron von Lieven liked to use the castle as a summer residence and hunting lodge , for example for duck hunting. After his death, his son Karl Georg von Lieven managed the property. In 1905 Baron Alexander von Lieven is named as the owner. The last owner was Carlos von Lieven (1879–1971). The von Lieven family owned the estate until the First World War .

From 1920 to 1939 the owners of the castle changed regularly. In 1939 a children's home was opened on the estate , which was only closed in 2012. Currently the mansion is a hotel in which many different events such as concerts , weddings , seminars or the hackathon Latvia take place.
