Castle of Nemours
Watchtower, called Tour de guet

The Nemours Castle in Nemours , a commune in the Seine-et-Marne in the French region of Ile-de-France , was built in the 12th century. In 1926, the castle was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

Gaulthier I von Nemours had the castle built in the last third of the 12th century as part of a new urban complex, which also included a monastery with the church of St-Jean-Baptiste . It is located on the left bank of the Loing River and near the old bridge, so it was used to defend the city and monitor the bridge. The fortress-like castle was rebuilt in the 15th and 17th centuries.

description

The castle has a donjon , four round corner towers and a rectangular watchtower ( Tour de guet ) with a height of 26 meters. The courtyard facing away from the river (cour d'honneur) is surrounded by old houses that formed the original town center.

Todays use

In 1903, a city administration museum was opened in the castle, displaying works of art (paintings, graphics and prints) from the 19th and 20th centuries. Exhibits dedicated to the city's history were added later.
