The Château d'Orion , which was built in the 17th century and has a strong identity for the Béarn region , is located in the south-west of France and has been an important point of contact for the surrounding population since its creation.

Geographical location

The house is located in the commune of the same name Orion , in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department . Is known the area through the vineyards Jurançon and the thermal baths of Salies-de-Bearn . The place is also directly on the famous pilgrimage route to St. James .

history

The typical Béarnais country castle has been continuously expanded over the centuries. The original interior has been largely preserved to this day, and some of it is still in its original condition.

The Casamayor family were the first owners of the property. Until the French Revolution they looked after the nearby church. After the restoration in France , the Jean-Ninon Larrouy family, who had gained wealth and prosperity thanks to the trade in the coveted Bayonn ham , bought the estate in the 19th century.

Through the heirs of Louis and then Henriette Larrouy, the house came into the possession of the famous French surgeon Paul Reclus . He experimented with cocaine as an anesthetic in Paris and invented the ointment Pommade de Reclus . Hénri de Regnier , the poet and friend André Gides , dedicated his own sonnet to his coveted daughter Madeleine Reclus , in which it says: "I love your house, which bears the name of a star that your eyes light up ...". Two of Paul Reclus' five brothers were also well-known personalities in their day. Élisée Reclus was one of the most famous anarchists in France and a world-famous geographer, and Armand Reclus worked as an engineer on the construction of the Panama Canal .

His descendant Jean Labbé married Marguerite Bérard, the daughter of the then French Minister of Education, Léon Berard , in the 1950s . This still lives today at Orion Castle.

today

Even today, the house is open to the public and the entire property extends over 30 hectares, of which 15 hectares are forest. After the handover of the house to the German Premauer family, who bought the Château d'Orion in 2003, many parts of the house were renovated and renewed. The company Château d'Orion , which was then founded, operates the Château as a guest and event house. Various regularly organized cultural events of the regional association ensure that the Château d'Orion remains as a social and cultural center of the region.
