history

Schwendt Castle, copper engraving by Michael Wening (1721)

Schwendt is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The Schwendter family , a ministerial family of the Counts of Neuburg , owned the castle until the 14th century . Documents mentioned include 1155 Gotfridus de Suuent , 1164 Pilgrim von Swent or 1170 Albertus von Suent . From 1320 Schwendt Castle appears in the possession of the Lords of Messenbach . In 1322 and 1340 Hadamar von Messenbach, Ritter zu Schwendt is mentioned in a document. In 1394 Ulrich von Messenbäck , who was also the castle keeper at Schärding , owned the castle. Schwendt remained in the possession of the Messenbach family for the next 200 years.

Schwendt Castle burned down in 1586, but was rebuilt by Sigmund von Messenbäck . With Seifried von Messenbäck , the Messenbach family died out in the male line. Knight Riederer von Paar , Seifried's brother-in-law, was his heir. He sold Schwendt Castle with the nearby Kalling Castle (now part of the Diersbach community ) in 1635 to the Countess von Thürheim . As early as 1653, Schwendt and Kalling were sold on to the barons of Riesenfels.

Other Schwendt owners appear to be:

  • Franz Freiherr von Riesenfels
  • Johann Conrad Freiherr von Riesenfels
  • Ferdinand Heinrich Freiherr von Riesenfels
  • Philip Freiherr von Riesenfels (from 1823)

After the abolition of the lordship in Austria, Philipp Freiherr von Riesenfels sold the palace building including around 20 hectares of forest to the Salzburg wholesaler Carl Antesner in 1850 , while he auctioned the surrounding agricultural land. Carl Antesner sold the castle a little later to the leather man Anton Gruber from Eggerding . He initially set up a leather shop in the castle, but began demolishing the castle building in 1866 and selling the demolition material. In 1870 he finally built a house on the old site of the castle using the remaining demolition material.

description

Location of Schwendt Castle

According to the only surviving view of the castle by Michael Wening , Schwendt was a two-storey building around 1721, which was surrounded by a circular moat. Access was via a bridge on the south side.

After the castle had been completely demolished, a residential building was built from some remains at its old location, which still rises above its location today.
