history

The property in Skånela parish by Lake Fysingen belonged to King Magnus I in the early 13th century and was sold to the nuns of Sko Monastery in 1276 . Under Gustav I. Wasa the property went back to the crown and in 1641 Anders Gyldenklou bought it . Gyldenklou operated a comprehensive trade in goods and land and also owned properties in Södermanland , Västergötland and Bremen-Verden . Under him, the castle was given the appearance shown in the Suecia antiqua et hodierna work and his descendants had the estate until 1735. The castle was probably completed in 1643. During restoration work, fragments of a chimney were discovered which showed the coat of arms of the Gyldenklou knight house and the year 1643, which led to the conclusion that it must be the year of completion.

In 1742, Foreign Trade Councilor Frans Jennings bought the property and converted it into a family fideikommiss . This was dissolved in 1918. Herbert Rettig bought the castle in 1929 and donated it to the Royal Academy of Learning, History and Antiquities in 1962 .

The buildings

Skånelaholm Castle consists of a main building with the main facade facing the land and four free-standing wings. When it was inhabited, a canal led to the castle, but today there is a park between the castle and the lake. The rectangular main building with a steep pitched roof has two main floors as well as basement and attic rooms. There is also a dungeon in the basement , a relic from Gyldenklou's time.

In 1965 the building was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne .
