The lock
The history of the oldest building in Spremberg goes back to the 11th century. Initially a Romanesque moated castle , the building was expanded into an early Baroque complex under the dukes of Saxe-Merseburg , especially Duke Heinrich . After the Merseburg secondary school died out and the castle was taken over by the Electorate of Saxony in 1738, it served administrative purposes until 1997.
Today the castle houses the Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum, the music and art school and the district library of the Spree-Neisse district . Various exhibitions run in the museum throughout the year.
In the park by the castle there is an original Wendish farm and a lapidarium with individual pieces from the demolition of the village during lignite mining.
