Architecture and history

Today's castle goes back to a moated castle built in the 15th century . The castle was surrounded on all sides by moats that were filled from the lake that still exists today. The castle was a typical Swedish house castle and consisted of only one building. The first known owner was the Squire Eskild Aagesen . This oldest building now forms the north wing. The castle was in the battle zone of the Danish-Swedish wars. It burned down during the Three Crowns War. After the destruction in the 16th and 17th centuries, new buildings were built, especially in 1566. During the Northern War , the complex was the Danish residence. In a representation from 1680, the complex has essentially its current appearance. The restoration of the facility after the destruction caused by the war was mainly carried out at the instigation of Baroness Lena Sofie von Putbus . Your initials can be found on the east gable of the main wing. Renovations took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today the complex consists of four wings that are grouped around a small inner courtyard. Between 1756 and 1780, Betty Jennings built stone cow stalls. The castle has belonged to the aristocratic Wachtmeister family since 1801 .

The castle park began to be laid out around 1750. In the park there is an oak that probably dates back to around 1500, which at times served as a blood and real oak. The park has been open to the public since around 1900 and contains an extensive and well-known art exhibition. The lords of the castle began collecting art objects as early as the 18th century. Today's Slott Vanås Sculpture Park has existed since 1987.
