The so-called Varchentin Castle is a listed former manor house in Varchentin , a district of the municipality of Groß Plasten in the Mecklenburg Lake District ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ).

History and architecture

The broadly plastered building stands over an irregular floor plan. It was built in 1847 by the Hamburg architect Auguste de Meuron , who came from Switzerland, based on the forms of English and Venetian Gothic ( Tudor style ). The client was the Hamburg merchant Gottlieb Jenisch . The silhouette shows parts of the building at different heights. The side of the building is dominated by a battlements and towers. The property went to the Counts of Grote through marriage in 1875 , the last owner from this family was Friedrich Franz Graf Grote . The buildings were looted after 1945. In the following time, the facility was used to accommodate refugees and then as a forest technology school.

At the beginning of 2006 the castle was bought by an investor who wanted to renovate it and convert it into a hotel complex. In 2008 this project was abandoned. In 2015, the previous owner decided to sell the castle and the surrounding area. In July 2016, the Varchentiner Schloss eV association acquired the castle with its outbuildings and Lennè Park in order to preserve the monument and to use it for public, social and cultural purposes. The purchase was canceled, however, and the future of the castle has been uncertain since September 2018. The castle and the manor were sold again at the end of 2018.

Landscape park

A listed landscape park is in front of the castle. It was laid out in 1838 on behalf of Gottlieb Jenisch according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné . The extensive complex offers impressive lines of sight and a direct view of the lake below the manor house.

mausoleum

This also listed mausoleum was in 1895 with an elaborately in Haustein designed New-Renaissance built. The brick building was built for Adolf Graf von Grote. It stands south of the manor house and is integrated into the park. After the Second World War , the mausoleum was looted for scrap metal extraction.
