The Vrchotovy Janovice Castle (German Janowitz ) in the municipality of the same name Vrchotovy Janovice belongs to the okres Benešov in the Czech Republic .

history

The Vrchotovy Janovice chateau was built in the Renaissance style by the Říčany lords at the end of the 16th century on the site of a former Gothic fortress surrounded by a moat , and expanded a few decades later by the Vrtba lords .

From 1750–1755 there were modifications in the Baroque style . In the middle of the 19th century the palace was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style by the noble family Wratislaw von Mitrowitz .

The stairwell is adorned with wall paintings by F. Dallinger and statues in the Rococo style by L. Widmann.

After the First World War , Vrchotovy Janovice Castle was a meeting place for famous artists, including the writers Karl Kraus , Rainer Maria Rilke , Karel Čapek , the architect Adolf Loos and the painter Max Švabinský . They were invited by the then owner Sidonie Nádherná von Borutín , who ran literary and cultural salons in the castle.

In 1942, Janowitz Castle was confiscated by German troops because of the construction of the Beneschau SS military training area , and Countess Sidonie Nádherny of Borutin was expropriated. In 1945 Vrchotovy Janovice Castle was given back, but it was first used by the Soviet and then by the Czechoslovak army. After the seizure of power by the communists in February 1948 Sidonie Nádherný was expropriated again by Borutin. The castle was initially used as a textile warehouse, later used by the district archive, and was finally empty. In the late 1950s, it was saved from deterioration by the Prague National Museum .
